I’ve been partial to tinkering with my computers for quite a while now. My hard drive to Solid State Drive upgrade, battery replacement, OS re-installation, even keyboard replacement, I’ve done it myself.

Oftentimes, the tinkering was motivated by a lack of funds and a desire for upgrading combined with just wanting to open up my computers.

Henceforth, my latest attempt at tinkering; the upgrade of an unsupported Macbook pro 13 Inch (early 2011) from MacOS High Sierra to Catalina (2 generations up)

I followed the instructions and managed to install Catalina successfully. Here’s my account of the experience:

Installation

The download took some time, as expected of a large file such as an installer. After the download has finished, do patch the installer using the included Catalina patcher, or the installer will not work (it will simply state that your Macbook is incompatible with the installer)

As recommended by the website, I used an external USB drive to create a bootable installer. Pressing the [ALT option] key while restarting, I entered the recovery mode and selected install MacOS. After you click next several times during the installation progress, the installation will start.

Here, I was not sure what affected the speed. As I was using an SSD, there should not have been a speed bottleneck there. Perhaps it was due to the slow USB connection on the 2011 Macbook Pro. Nevertheless, I managed to complete the installation after about 1 hour.

The initialisation process also encountered a hitch. The first log in became stuck in a loop error, after which I had to force restart the macbook.

Using MacOS Catalina on the early 2011 Macbook Pro

There was a slight but noticeable lag when I startup the Macbook Pro. Subsequently, usage of Google Chrome has a very significant lag when I start it up that was not present when High Sierra was installed. I cannot be sure if it is due to insufficient RAM or optimisation issues with unsupported hardware.

Conversely, there is no issue when starting up Safari, or the other Apple apps that I use (the iWorks suite, the app store, etc…). Most apps are reasonably snappy after clicking, with few instances of the spinning beach ball.

P.S. incidentally, this review/ report of the usage was typed on my Macbook Pro 2011 running Catalina, for what it’s worth.

Open Disk Utility in the Utilities' folder.
After Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry with the mfg.'s ID and size) from the side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the Disk Utility toolbar. Name the drive, 'MyVolume'. <---- IMPORTANT!
In the drop down panel set the partition scheme to GUID. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Click on the Apply button and wait for the Done button to activate. When it does click on it.
Quit Disk Utility.

However, my strong recommendation for media professionals is that you NOT upgrade immediately.

NOTE: I totally support this new version of macOS. I am simply urging caution in deciding when to update.

Specifically, wait at least a month, especially if you are in the middle of a project. This is a big upgrade and, while Apple and its beta testers have put it through its paces, there’s nothing like real-life to find bugs in the operating system.

Final Cut Sierra County

Over the years, waiting to upgrade the operating system until you are between projects is always wise. If you are never “between projects,” upgrade when you can afford the time to be down for a day; just in case. (Remember, the world will not end if you find yourself running an older OS for a few months.)

DISABLE AUTOMATIC UPDATING

Complicating this update is a default setting in System Preferences > App Store that will automatically install all macOS updates, without first asking your permission, as soon as they are released.

Be sure to UNcheck this option (red arrow in the screen shot above). This disables automatic updating and puts you in charge of when to upgrade.

A NOTE ON APFS

The new Apple File System (APFS) coming in High Sierra promises major speed and stability improvements over HFS+. However, the new file system will ONLY update SSD boot drives. According to Apple, it will not update Fusion drives, spinning media drives, or any external media.

Because this is a MAJOR change to the file system, waiting a month or so for any potential bugs to be found and fixed makes a lot of sense.

Here’s an article I wrote specifically for media folks on the new Apple file system.

A NOTE ON PLUG-INS

It is always wise to assume that plug-ins will NOT work when the new operating system is announced. If there are plug-ins you depend upon for your editing, verify they are compatible before you update.

In general, plug-in developers track the beta process fairly closely to be sure their software will work with the new version. However, no developer is completely confident about compatibility until the actual gold master is released. Apple has been known to make changes at the last minute that breaks stuff.

For this reason, there are often delays between the release of an update from Apple and full support from 3rd-party developers.

This is another great reason to hold off updating until you know that all the software tools you rely on are fully operational under the new OS.

A NOTE ON FCP 7

Apple has announced that Final Cut Pro 7, and the rest of Final Cut Studio 3 applications, will not work on High Sierra.

If you depend upon FCP 7 for your work, it is critical that you NOT update to High Sierra. If you need both High Sierra and FCP 7, you’ll need to create a dual boot drive. Here’s how.

A NOTE ON HEVC

HEVC, also called H.265, is a new compression standard that is supported natively in macOS High Sierra.

Find a memory card containing pictures you want to copy to the computer and insert the card into the camera.
Loss of power during transfer could result in loss of data or damage to the memory card. Insert a fresh or fully-charged battery before connecting the camera.
Ready a third-party USB 2.0 cable with a Micro USB (Micro-B) connector. Turn the camera off and connect the cable, making sure the connectors are fully inserted.
Turn the camera on.
Copy pictures to the computer using MyFinePix Studio or applications provided with your operating system.
When transfer is complete, turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable.

If a memory card containing a large number of images is inserted, there may be a delay before the software starts and you may be unable to import or save images. Use a memory card reader to transfer pictures.

The USB cable must be no more than 1.5 m (4.9 ft.) long and be suitable for data transfer. Connect the camera directly to the computer; do not use a USB hub or keyboard.

Make sure that the computer does not display a message stating that copying is in progress and that the indicator lamp is out before turning the camera off or disconnecting the USB cable (if the number of images copied is very large, the indicator lamp may remain lit after the message has cleared from the computer display). Failure to observe this precaution could result in loss of data or damage to the memory card.

Disconnect the camera before inserting or removing memory cards.

In some cases, it may not be possible to access pictures saved to a network server using the software in the same way as on a standalone computer.

This book was required reading for my 20th Century European History course as part of my university degree program. I should start off by saying my knowledge of history is truly horrible. The subject didn’t interest me at all when I was young, and I paid as little attention as possible. But I’m a lot older now (I’m a returning student, not a traditional college-aged student), and I enjoyed the opportunity to remedy some of my ignorance.
There were both good things and bad things about this book. I liked the way the book went into detail about the various events. It didn’t just say “this happened and then that happened”. It explained things from the perspectives of all of the major players involved so that I could better understand why things happened the way they did. For me, that was what made it really interesting – understanding how and why things happened. The authors also highlighted turning points, and even engaged in some speculation as to what might have happened if different paths were taken. As with any textbook there were parts that I found dry and boring, but I was more interested in what I was reading than I had hoped to be.
However, I had some real trouble with the organization of the material. The book jumped back and forth in time a lot. It often focused on one geographic area and/or topic and described events that happened over several years, and then it moved to a new area/topic and went back in time. The problem is that events were usually pretty intertwined. Things discussed in one section were often relevant to things discussed in other sections from the same time period. By splitting them up, I had trouble keeping track of the context of events and I had to do quite a bit of re-reading to keep track of what was happening when and how it was all connected.
The time hopping happened constantly throughout the book, and in many different forms. It happened between chapters, within chapters, and even within section breaks. One simple example of what I’m talking about occurred in Chapter 17. On page 492, the Common Market is being discussed. We’re told that it helped improve peace in Western Europe and, as an example of that improved peace, we’re told that German NATO troops were training on French soil in the mid-1960’s without creating any sort of a stir. Then, a little bit later on the same page, we switch to a topic that covers NATO and we’re back in 1948. So, on the very next page, the French are upset because a separate German army was being recreated.
This organization style also meant that terms, concepts, and people were sometimes introduced well before the sections where they were discussed in depth. I was constantly doing double takes and skimming back over previously-read material to try to understand apparent contradictions. And sometimes, the dates just weren’t mentioned that clearly. We also skipped around a bit with our assigned chapters in my class, although we did eventually read the entire book, so that exacerbated the problem. But there was plenty of confusion to be had for me within single chapters.
I can understand the purpose of focusing on one topic or region at a time. Europe is a large continent and there were lots of things going on, so it would surely be equally confusing if the authors had tried to present the entire history in precise chronological order. But I do think many of the topics were split out more than necessary and would have flowed better if discussed in chronological order within a single section. Another thing that might have helped would have been chapter timelines listing the major events discussed in the chapter in chronological order, with perhaps a higher-level timeline at the front of the book to help with keeping track of the big picture. Of course, if I’d had a better foundation in history to begin with, I might have been able to follow the book more easily. ( )

This tip/post is going to be about several common Mac OS X commands and wildcard characters I have discovered, at work, that is useful to understand and know how to use. First off, wildcard characters are special characters such as * and ? that help you to find groups of filenames that have something in common.
For example, say I have a couple of files that I want to find in my home directory. My home directory is cluttered with junk files that I never take the time to organize. But somewhere within that junk pile of files there lay 8 files I would like. Their filenames are ssw_idl.a285, ssw_idl.r391, ssw_idl.z988, ssw_idl.c293, and the other 4 files are named similarly (“ssw_idl.” followed by a letter, then 3 numbers).
Open up terminal (or something similar like X11’s xterm) and type in ls then enter. This lists all your files and folders in the current directory.
Cramming time:
cd – changes directories (directories = folders). cd . to go up a directory and cd FOLDERNAME to go to a folder in the current directory.
rm – deletes files/folders.
mkdir – makes directories (folders).
say 'Hello!' – computer says ‘Hello!’
more textFileName – opens up a text file for viewing inside the command line/shell.

Am I really talking about Windows Vista right now? Well, that is the origins of Purble Place. It originally started life as a free game that was part of the Windows Vista OS. It built up a bit of a cult following (kind of like Minesweeper and that weird skiing game did) and now it can be played on Windows 10.

The shtick of Purble Place (often misspelled as Purple Place) is that it is actually three games in one. These are puzzle based games and I would say that there is a high chance that there is at least one game out of the three that you will like. Presentation wise, Purble Place is not going to blow you away (and this was the case when it was first released too) but it is pleasant enough. Gameplay is available at different difficulty levels. While this is a “kids” game, the harder difficulties are rather challenging.
Purble Pairs
The first game I want to talk about is Purble Pairs. As the name suggests this is the classic game pairs. It starts off simple with just a few pairs, but as you progress more pairs for you to find get added. What I like about Purble Pairs is that first of all pairs is a game that I have always found very relaxing. This version though also has special cards that do special things. Joker cards, for example, will find another pair for you. A clock card gives you more time, Master Chef who will find all the pairs that are food! These are fun and when you get the chance to use one it is actually quite exciting.
Comfy Cakes
This reminds me of a more basic version of the game Overcooked. The idea of Comfy Cakes is that you are a chef and you will be needing some Spider-Man levels of hand-eye coordination when you get to the later levels. Orders come in for some delicious cakes and you need to get all of the ingredients off the conveyor belt. You need to get the right shape of cake, the color of batter and so on.You can only mess up three orders before it is game over. The higher the level, the faster and more complicated things get. This is one of those games where you have to try and think two or three moves ahead. It is fun and one of the more nerve-wracking games in Purble Place.

I would say that Purble Shop is my least favorite of the three games. The idea here is that you need to help a little dude look sharp. The AI is going to decide the colors of up to five different aspects of the person. These are their eyes, nose, mouth, clothes, and hat. It is not all five on the earlier levels. The AI will give you the colors and then you need to figure out what body part is what color.
The early levels are super simple as if you guessed a couple right but got some wrong, the AI tells you what ones you got right. On the higher levels, this is not the case. It will tell you what color you got right, but not for what body part. This is pretty tough and gives you a real mental workout.
I think that Purble Place is a pretty neat game and back in the day it was something fun that as included with windows. Dr. adam 27s zoo biology lab. I can see why it has a bit of a cult following with people who had Windows Vista a few years back and I do actually think there is a fair bit of charm here. If you ask me Purble Pairs and Comfy Cakes are two games that are actually really fun, Purble Shop, on the other hand, was not something I really enjoyed.

Found in music/menu, Howtoplay.ogg is the song from the How To Play section in the original Super Smash Bros. It was obviously intended for a 'how to play' cutscene present in each of the Smash Bros. games, which this game lacks. The controls are self-explanatory, though.
Break the Team!
What appears to be a well-hidden inside joke of some sort. In fighter/hand, this odd sound file lays there with the title snd_crazy_death_unused. This file has in fact nothing to do with Crazy Hand, but rather the Melee announcer. It sounds poorly recorded, as if from the Melee Sound Test.

nar_adventure.wav, an unused announcer clip of him saying 'Adventure!', which probably meant that there was going to be an Adventure Mode at some point.
Another clip has him saying 'Race to the Finish', which suggests that a 'Race to the Finish' stage (like in Melee) was going to be implemented in Classic Mode. Later returning in v9.1.
There's one for him saying 'wins', which in the N64 iteration was used in the after-match results screen of a Team Battle ('Red/Blue/Green Team wins!') and is used by default in Ultimate ('[Character] wins!').
Voice clip of the Announcer saying 'King of the Ring', which goes unused in previous builds. The idea itself was added in v9.1.

There is a call for Nightmare. This call would be for either the final boss from Kirby's Adventure and its remake, or a main character of the Soul Calibur series.
Paper Mario. Possibly a moveset swap for Mario.
Pit, from Kid Icarus.
A call for Scizor, a Pokémon, can be found.
Super Star Gang, possibly referring to the helpers in Kirby Super Star.
Calls for Zelda and Sheik can be found. Both Legend of Zelda characters.
Simon from Castlevania has his own call, who also eventually debuted in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
There is a call for Sir Kibble. This would probably go with Super Star Gang.
A call for Sub-Zero, from the Mortal Kombat series, is also present. Let's just say he's too frozen to fight.
The main character from Joy Mech Fight, Sukapon, also has a call.
There is one of him saying 'Cloud', most likely referring to Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII, who eventually debuted in Smash 4. No echo.
'Hector', most likely the Fire Emblem character. Purpose unknown, no echo.
'Isaac', probably the Golden Sun character. Purpose unknown.

Unused Stage Content
Onett
As of v0.8, Onett was removed from the Stage Select screen. However, the code still exists and can be accessed with the Random button. The stage was removed completely in v0.8.4.
..However a preview file for it can be found. It's unlike any other preview picture currently in the game. Most notably, it uses a circular outline rather than a rectangular one.

Rainbow Road
Earlier demos suggest that Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64 was going to be a playable stage. The most current demos only leave one bit of it behind: a stage icon.
